Firefox + Adblock
Posted by ePlus on 14 May, 2005 at 18:27 pmWhile playing around with Adblock (bored) I noticed its “Import filter” option and got me thinking. A quick search on the Google produced some results for some filters that you can use for Adblock.
So let’s get started. This is my quick and easy guide! To begin, here is a quick introduction…
Firefox

Adblock
Adblock is a content filtering plug-in for the Mozilla and Firebird browsers. It is both more robust and more precise than the built-in image blocker. Adblock allows the user to specify filters, which remove unwanted content based on the source-address. If this sounds complicated, don’t worry: it’s not. Just add a few filters. Every time a webpage loads, Adblock will intercept and disable the elements matching your filters. See?- nothing to it.
Importing the filter list
Having already installed Firefox and installed the Adblock extension we can quickly import the filter list for Adblock to block. One thing you have to remember though, the filter lists from the internet mainly contain websites blocked by other people that they have browsed. So really, in actual fact if you go to a website that the user who produced that filter hasn’t been on it and hasn’t blocked it, then the adverts on it won’t be blocked. You will have to do it manually. 
Ok so anyway, let’s begin:
First we go to Tools >> Adblock >> Preferences or CTRL + SHIFT + P
Next we click on Adblock Options (on the top right panel) >> Import Filters.
We then browse to our filter list, which in this example is called adblock.txt and we open it
Lastly we click OK to overwrite our current list
*Note* that by overwriting your current list you will loose all of the blocked ads/etc on all the websites that are not included in your new filter that you are importing.
A sample filter list that you can use which I got from a website is something similar to this:

To use the above filters in as your filter just copy the text as it is, save it in notepad as a .txt file and then import it in Adblock using the above guide.
You can get a lot more custom filters for Adblock by doing this simple search on Google. Also keep an eye on this website because it has up-to-date filter lists which are very useful. I haven’t been on it because Geocities has ran out of bandwidth to access the website.
