Health and Safety

Posted by ePlus on 16 September, 2006 at 14:40 pm

Health and Safety is bullshit. I can’t change the bulb at work in the toilet because it is H&S. Ummmm what?! :? I have to take a piss in the dark because I am NOT allowed to change the bulb? A qualified person has to be called in (an electrician) to change the bulb, because of H&S rules and regulations no one in the store can change it.

Now do you think that I would ask to change the bulb so that if I somehow injure myself I’ll sue the company? What sort of dumbass in his/her right mind is going to do something like change a bulb, run down the stairs, try to balance on a stick or whatever, and then if they injure themselves they will sue the company that they work for. From the moment that I go to my boss “Where are the spare bulbs so that I can replace the one in the toilet as I can’t see where I am aiming at?” - then it would seem logical that if anything *happens* to me while I change the bulb, e.g. fall over, electrocute myself or whatever, then it is all at my own risk.

But hey…. WELCOME TO GREAT BRITAIN where the Government brings up new laws/rules and regulations to piss people off, be awkward and make life harder.

While I am still on about H&S, it is in today’s paper, Daily Mail, that the “police are being told not to chase criminals as their Health and Safety can be put at risk”. :o

- Sorry, come again?

You mean some thug just stab someone and I can’t go and chase the motherfucker because I will be putting HIS Health and Safety at risk?!! - WTF?

But hey…. That’s GREAT Britain for you….

British National Party Leaflet

Posted by ePlus on 26 June, 2006 at 23:26 pm

A BNP (British National Party) leaflet came through the letterbox the other day along with other useless crap such as take-aways menus and on the leaflet at the back in the “Frequently Asked Questions” part there was this question:

Q Are you racist?
A No. The BNP opposes mass immigration into the UK from any source . For 40 years this immigration has primarily been coloured. But it is not an issue of colour since the party is equality opposed to immigration from places like Albania and Romania.

The truth is that the BNP are resisting the racist colonisation of Britain in which the native people of Britain are having their culture suppressed, their land colonised and are being discriminated against racial grounds. That’s the real racism and it makes us the only real anti racists

OK. The concept of that answer is fair. For example, I would be pissed off if people came into my country and bitched about this and that and then having to feel threatened or whatever IN MY OWN COUNTRY! But the thing is that as far as I am aware from what I have been reading in the papers and watch on the news on TV, is that Britain has shot itself in the foot with the laws that they have came up with etc. For example it was in the paper not long ago that Labour are thinking or going to make the English history lessons at school compulsory so that people from ethnic backgrounds can learn their own history about their countries etc. Now hold on a minute…. You come in my country and you want to learn about your country? But you expect to get benefits, live here, be safe and all that but you won’t have a clue about the history of this country?

Another incident which goes some time back is when a play at some theatres across the UK were showing a play of some woman getting raped and with some religious people etc. The Muslim community quickly rushed and protested about it saying that they were offended and some other bullshit like that, and the play was never showed because of the protests. No hold on a minute… Your in my country and you dare to bitch about what shit goes on down at the local theatre, after I let you live in my country, claim benefits and what have you not? But hey, due to laws and other lame rules, people can even sue a sport centre because they fell on their own shoe laces while running. That’s how fucked up the shit is around here in the UK.

And as of two days ago, over 500 England supporters got arrested because of starting fights in Germany with German supporters by singing racists songs and throwing chairs, beer bottles and pint glasses at the German supporters walking by this place the English supporters were drinking at. Now let me see…. Who are the racist ones here?!

As far as I can see the BNP are not admitting the truth in saying that the laws that they (or the Labour party) have introduced and also lets not forget the Human Right laws which were introduced after the first World War by Britain to help people who suffer etc. So as far as I am concerned it is time to look in your garden first before criticising mine!

Migrant Workers

Posted by ePlus on 20 June, 2006 at 22:57 pm

The county in the UK is bitching that their British citizens are loosing work to foreign workers. Well boo hoo to that. All I have to say to that is:

FOREIGNERS AREN’T STEALING YOUR JOBS, THEY GET THE JOBS BECAUSE THEY WORK HARDER, DON’T HAVE MANY SICK DAYS OFF AND DO MORE WORK FOR LESS PAY AND DON’T BITCH ABOUT IT! And a few other things besides that…

I mean come on, let’s see this from an employer’s point of view, they have the choice between:

  • Lazy worker
  • Bitching about low pay
  • Calls in sick when gets a runny nose
  • Not loyal and not dedicated to the job

And then the employer has the option of the opposite of the above. Now I can bet that they will go for the latter rather than the former unless they are bound by the law to employ a local/British person, similar to where I live. So by saying that foreigners come in the UK and steal your jobs and other lame shit like that think why do they get employed before you.

Though this only applies to mainly unskilled jobs, such as builders, shelf stackers and those who work in warehouses to mention a few. But there are also foreign doctors, nurses and whatever else working for the NHS because everyone else is going private because of the shit they have to put with in the NHS.

Food, Fussy And Being Healthy

Posted by ePlus on 19 June, 2006 at 23:56 pm

People around here are so fussy. This evening I cooked some steak and I let someone taste a bit of it and they didn’t like it because it was too chewy?! WTF? :o People around here, mainly kids and anyone who has actually lived a life without being licked in the ass and always had their food cut for them etc. (it wouldn’t surprise me if their parents haven’t chewed the food for them), would know about not being fussy, picky and not liking this and that or whatever.

When I was growing up I didn’t have the luxury to choosing what to eat and what to like. If there was chicken soup cooked we ate everything from the chicken (apart from the asshole), head, legs, neck, everything. No space for throwing things away. In thosedays TESCO didn’t exist. You couldn’t just “nip down to TESCO” and buy a ready meal. (Mind you with the amount of chemicals in these ready meals I’m surprised people aren’t addicted on them… Or aren’t they?! But that’s a rant in its own.) You had tocook a meal that would usually last a couple of days from what it was at the stalls were peasants would bring goods for sale. And just to point out, those goods weren’t packed/packaged or checked by health officials nor they had to follow any standards, so like the milk for example that would be put in 500ml - 2L bottles and then sold as it was! You got home, you boiled it and off you go. That was that. If that isn’t organic or what then I don’t know what it is.

And these days people bitch about some meatbeing too chewy. I mean people even bitch about the water tasting crap and that nice?! WHAT THE FUCK? Give me a break, lol, here in the UK where the water is purified 10x and contains 60% chlorine to kill all of the bacteria in the water, and people bitch about it tasting funny. Well what about the people in third world countries? Where they have to drink water from wells and lakes full of mud that have dead animals and whatever else floating in them, and you don’t see them bitch about it. And hereyou are, in the UK, one of the most advanced industrial economical countries in the world and the sixth largest gross domestic product in the world, people bitch about the water tasting crap from the tap. THE IRONY. I can bet money that if somethingbad happened and all of the things that people take for granted would disappear and people would have to resort to fend for themselves, to find food, build a shelter, etc. 99.9% of the UK population would DIE. Purely because of the things everyonetakes for granted. But lets hope that a day like that won’t come.

I have noticed that mothers of young children buy a lot of ready meals for their babies and young children. And also a recent survey says that around 70% of mothers give their children at least five times a week a ready made meal and/or take-aways. Great way to kill your kids and make them unhealthy. By giving babies meals from jars/cans that have their expiry date three years from when they were manufactured because of chemicals they contain to preserve the contents to me would trigger my “this shit is bad” alarm. I am no food expert, nutrition, doctor, or whatever, but from my logical view feeding a baby, kid and anyone with read made meals and take aways on a frequent basis would do some serious damage. I personally, am not surprisedby people here in the UK being diagnosed with cancer, various diseases and a lot more things.

You could say that there is no evidence that such foods cause any of the above or that they are even linked, but I am not going to take the risk. Yes I agree that mothers come home from work late and they can’t be bothered to prepare a meal from scratch but rather than having in later life a kid which is prone to getting colds often and or not being healthy because for years they have been feeding them ready meals and non-organic or no greens at all, I’ll rather pass.

It is scary at the amount of people I know that don’t like vegetables, such as tomatoes, salad, cabbage, asparagus, broccoli, cucumbers and fruits. I never ate asparagus until a year ago but when I was told that is good for you because it contains vitamin XYZ I ate it. Why? Becauseis good for me. Rather than eat that Mars bar why not an apple, even if its not organic, but the organic ones contain a higher amount of vitamins and are tastier.

This whole food issue is a very complicated matter and it would take me a lot longer to write it up to point the obvious. Bad food from early ages is bad for anyone. I went three years without catching a cold/flu or whatever and that’s because that I didn’t eat ready meals and fast foods. Or rarely, I would say I ate a take away once every 3-4 months. It is important to feed babies/kids greens and fruitsfrom a young age to make them healthy and to get them used with the healthy foods. I know people who eat chocolate in the mornings on an empty stomach. Well that’s their choice;I eat an apple/banana on an empty stomach before my lunch, which would consist of a brown bread egg salad sandwich (usually).

All in all what I have said above is due to a combination of common sense + logical thinking². And after reading all of that youre still saying “What?” - then your too much of a dumbass to even live.

Spare Change

Posted by ePlus on 4 May, 2006 at 23:32 pm

Just after reading this interesting article about a straw being developed to allow people to drink water from rivers, lakes, or anywhere where the water might contain bacteria and other diseases. It sounds like a very good and useful idea, and by the looks of things, people in poorer countries will benefit a great deal from this. But an interesting part of the article caught my eye and made me think about some things:

$3.50 sounds like very little to you and me - but most people in those countries earn less than one dollar a day, with which they have to feed their families,

The thing that came to my mind is how many people I know that throw away “spare change” such as 1, 2 and even 5 pence coins. That’s right, they just throw it away because from what I gather is that it is not cool enough to carry that sort of money with you. Is uselessand it is not needed. Well, I would only agree with it being a bit annoying when you are going to a shop and you are given 10 pence in 1 penny coins. That would piss me off, but under no circumstances I would throw it away on the floor, in the bin or even at people (might hurt them). I just find very sad that people throw money away. When someone throws money away I go pick it up. Call me a scrounger/poor/bum or whatever, but at the end of the it all adds up and I have £10 from money thrown away by people, usually the same people. I am not loosing anything, in fact I am gaining. Also I suppose my good luck with finding money helps too as I find more coins that a normal person would find, I guess my eyes jump straight at money, may it be on tables, floors, room corners, they just jump straight at it, is strange, but is like a money sixth sense.

But the people that throw the money away don’t know that what goes around comes around, and if they throw that 2 pence coin now because they have notes or a lot of 1 pound coins then let it be so, but one day they will have no money, and they will be asking people to borrow money, and they will even take whatever money is given to them, even if it is a 1 pence coin. But because they are so fucking dumb in the first place they don’t realise “Oh, why the fuck did I throw away that spare change when I had it?” - well let me tell you, because YOU’RE A STUPID FUCK who is deprived of common sense and future thinking.

I even know people that when they money because they don’t have any to buy food/drinks/condoms/etc. that even if you give them a 2 pence coin they will accept it, laugh at you and look at you funny then THROW the coin back at you. I mean WHAT THE FUCK? how much more retarded can you can? This shit is unbelievable. But hey, what can you do? You can’t teach retards of what’s right and wrong. I mean, people like that don’t even learn from mistakes, fucking dumbasses. Their stupidity is so low that you get confused, and your brain goes into a “lock” trying to figure out WTF is going on.

Well I don’t care… I just pick up the change people throw away and… Well, I make money, I make profit. I must by now have over £100 from people that have thrown away or left spare change around. I haven’t as of yet counted to see how much I find of spare change. What can I say, I am in a money making business - FOR FREE!

Comments

I have noticed that a very grammatically retarded person or persons have been posting some rather amusing comments. The reason why they are amusingis because they are full of words which don’t make sense and/or they are in the dictionary. Maybe they are in the RETARDED DICTIONARY, but not in any that I know of.

Words such as “da, dis, cuz”, and many more are used in the [sarcasm] rather very insulting [/sarcasm] comments. Maybe I have missed something or maybe I wasn’t paying too much attention at school or skived the lesson which they taught you how to use these words.

Yes I know they are abbreviations of the actual words - da = the, dis = this, cuz = because, etc. - but the point is that these abbreviations should only be used in only extreme cases such as when you are writinga text message and you only have just enough money to send one text message. Only then and then only you have to resort of going through your text message and shrinking down the words so that you can fit all of it in one 145 character text message.

Also another reason why the comments are amusing, is because they don’t actually get submitted, they go to the “Moderation Department” - meaningany comments which contain certain keywords are automatically sent in for moderation. My site - my rules - don’t like it - go somewhere else.

Flood Maps

Posted by ePlus on 3 May, 2006 at 22:30 pm

Flood Maps allows you to see how the continents will look like when the sea level will rise. Very interesting and scary too. See for yourself! Imagine how many towns, islands, etc. will be underwater when the sea level will reach 14m. If it will reach that high in the first place!

The thing is that everyone blames it on the pollution and gasses, carbon dioxide, etc. But the way I see it is that Earth is nearing another ice age. There was one before and another is going to happen and it is going to be inevitable. The only thing with the pollution is that it accelerates it, but other than that in my opinion I don’t think that it can be stopped.

Anyway, I am not exactly in the mood to begin writing a lot about the environment, climate changes and the rest because frankly the majority of people who read my bitching don’t give two shits to what’s happeningto Billy down the road, so why should they care if the whole human race is at risk?

Health Problems Related to the Geek Lifestyle

Posted by ePlus on 5 April, 2006 at 23:42 pm

I am a currently practicing board-certified Internal Medicine physician in a large rapidly expanding tech-growth community. (Ed note: Verified) Our area is rapidly being filled with web development, IT, and biotechnology companies. As a doctor in this area over the last few years, I have discovered some unique health problems associated with this population. One of my patients pointed me to this site when I was discussing with her if computer use causes carpal tunnel syndrome.

I have always wanted to post my observations regarding the geek lifestyle. I affectionately call it the “geek lifestyle” because of my previous life of programming and web design. One of the best part of my job is getting to live vicariously through these young energetic people. I frequently wonder what would have happened to me if I would have stayed with my tech-life instead of transitioning to medicine.

Personal points aside, I have noticed several repeating patterns in this geek lifestyle population. Hopefully, these ideas will spark others to study this unique population.

#1 Horrible Sleep Hygiene
Insomnia and altered sleep patterns is one of the most common complaints to my office. Frequently the complaint is of light sleep or of multiple awakening throughout the night. Although this can be a symptom of depression, this is typically caused by poor sleep habits. It typically starts with somebody waking up in the middle of the night and turning on the laptop or TV. This begins to happen more and more frequently until the patient starts to worry about waking up as soon as they go to bed at night. This stress makes the sleep worse and worse until they finally come to see me.
The fix is typically easy if the habit is not too ingrained. The bed should only be used for two things–sex and sleep. If one is awake in bed for more than 10-15 minutes, one should get up and do something non-stimulating. Listening to music or reading are excellent choices. Lying in bed and watching TV or using the laptop are the worst. These stimulate the brain to wake up even more. If this happens repeatedly, the habit will be formed.

A few of my patients have tried “sleep hacking” and it almost always fails. The dangers of hacking sleep have been explored by a physician elsewhere.

#2 Headaches
Recurrent headaches are a very frequent complaint among heavy computer users. Typically these are caused by a multitude of issues regarding computer use. If they occur the same time every day or if they do not appear on non-work days, these are the clues that point me to a computer cause.

Often when I tell my patients that I suspect it is their work environment, they come back and tell me me how they fixed it. Poor screen position, too small font, screen too bright/too dark, poor sitting posture are all commonly reported causes of chronic headache. When in doubt, I just tell them to trade offices for a couple of days. If they feel better in the other office, then it suggests that it is related to their personal work environment.

Poor eyesight is frequently believed to be a cause of chronic headaches although I believe that is very overrated. What I have seen a few times is that people with glasses having too strong of a prescription. Type-A people when getting refracted for glasses will mistakenly report that higher and higher powers make them see better. To check for this when you get your glasses, just ask your doctor if the manual refraction is close to the computer-predicted, automated refraction. If the manual is a lot higher, then over-power should be a consideration.

#3 Back Pain

Back pain is a frequent complaint in my office as well. In the general patient population, chronic back pain is often a sign of depression; however, in the geek this is more frequently due to work conditions or to overuse. Poor posture, incorrectly sized chair, or poorly positioned monitors are common culprits.

The weekend warrior syndrome often causes the overuse back injury here. All week long the back becomes weak from sitting at the computer desk all day. On the weekend, yard work or lifting causes strain on these underdeveloped muscle units.

#4 Poor Attention Span
I am always amazed at the number of people that mention to me that their attention span is poor. Frequently they will wonder if they have ADD. Sometimes they will even complain about the inability to stay awake during long meetings or stay focuses on non-computer tasks.

First, if one has poor sleep for any reason, the attention span and ability to stay awake during the day will be severely impacted. Attention span cannot be fixed unless the sleep pattern is healthy.

I believe that “poor attention span” has unique aspects in the geek population because I believe many people become geeks because computers have always been one of the things that keep them stimulated. In fact, if I question someone about their attention span, they never, even have problems staying focused on their computer work. If someone is in the middle of some exciting programming, the focus is always there. Therefore, it is not just a generic “attention” problem.

I believe this relative perception of poor attention span is actually caused by two factors. The first is genetic. The brains of some people are just programmed to multi-task. These people likely excel in a computer-rich environment for this reason. I believe the second factor is a simple training issue. Let me explain with an analogy.

If I were to go and try to run a few miles this weekend, I would not be able to easily do so. My muscles are just out of shape from my lack of exercise over the last few months. However, if you take one of the these college basketball athletes, any of them would be able to run miles without even breathing heavy. However, if you made them sit down and try to learn Java for 12 hours a day, most of them would be asleep at their desk before lunch.

The typical geek trains their brain to be heavily focused while multitasking day after day. Is it surprising that this same brain does not do well when forced to isolate down to one task? Listening in a meeting is a very isolated, very passive event. Coding, developing, debugging — these are not passive at all. The geek brain is just not trained to sit quietly and listen.

Thank you to the editors of this site for allowing me to share my observations. I’ll be glad to answer questions in the comments below.

Very interesting and well written article. It was taken from here.

School Uniform

Posted by ePlus on 22 March, 2006 at 12:53 pm

Just on the news about this Muslim girl who went to court with her school over her not being allowed to wear her religious dress and head scarf etc. And because the school didn’t allow her to wear any of her religious clothes she took them to court. She can get the fuck out with that shit.

Don’t get me wrong here, I am not being racist or anything, but I think that if you go to a different country you should respect the rules of that country. As I come to your house and take my shoes off (the same applies in mosques), you should do the same thing in my house. If I don’t smoke, you shouldn’t smoke in house. I respect your rules you respect mine. Is a two way thing. You can’t possibly break my rules but I still have to obey yours. That shit isn’t fair.

This is I think the second case I have were some Muslim people went to court or protested about something they didn’t like that isn’t even in THEIR COUNTRY. It was a couple of months ago or maybe half a year were there was this play at a theatre about some religion thing and people were getting raped or something like that in the play, and when the play was going to be shown for the first time some Muslims quickly rushed outside and protested that they didn’t like it and that it offended them.

Ummm… WTF?! Let me tell you something, IF YOU DON’T LIKE IT DON’T WATCH IT! It is as simple as that. If I don’t like a movie that is on TV I simply switch the channel. If I don’t like the music that is on the radio, I simply turn it off. And if there is a play with people getting raped/killed/castrated or whatever, I just don’t go to see it. SIMPLE

So what, now if I go and live in a different country and if I don’t like something I’ll just simply protest or take whoever to court because shit didn’t go the way I wanted it to go. No, you shut the fuck up and respect the rules/laws. Yeah, I’ll just go to a Muslim country and walk into a mosque wearing my shoes, and I’ll just say “Oh yeah, well with my religion you don’t have to take your shoes off when you walk into a church, so I am not taking mine off.” You’d be pissed off if someone did/say that you.

I think that to some extend (without pushing it too much) some Muslim people are making it sound as if anything these is anti-Islamic. Such as head scarf’s not being allowed to be worn by Muslim girls in schools, some Muslim people quickly pointed out “Yes that’s anti-Islamic because of 9/11″. Umm…. NOPE? Is a rule that has been in schools since the dawn of time. But with all of this “Human Rights” and some other bullshit, people look for loopholes into these sorts of systems for useless little court cases, where common sense a little of intelligence would have solved the matter.

The way I see it is that if you go another country to live in you should respect that countries rules and laws. If they want you to go naked to school and you didn’t like it, then you move from that country. No one forces you to live there. But I guess because the UK is trying a “let’s be fair to everyone” thing, it causes more problems than it solves. I would have personally not changed anything because immigrants from other countries come over and they don’t like how the rules and laws are. If they don’t like it, then they should leave. I am an immigrant (not Muslim) myself, and there are a lot of rules and laws I don’t like, but because I want to live in this country I obey them and follow them. It is as simple as that.

If you thought that the above rant was racist or you got offended for whatever lame reason, then you lack the dexterity to even read between lines (look outside the box) of what I said and you should complain here: dontgiveashit@dumbass.info
